In short
- Visitors can read the site without an account. We count visits with Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity, which you can turn off.
- Members' accounts hold a name, an email address and a role. Passwords are stored scrambled, so nobody can read them.
- We don't sell your information, show adverts or send newsletters.
Who we are
This website is run by volunteers of Siston Archaeology Group, who decide what information is collected and how it is used. You can reach us through our contact page.
What we collect
If you just visit
Unless you turn them off, Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity record how the site is used: the pages you view, roughly where you are, your device and browser, and the site that sent you. Clarity also records clicks, taps and scrolling so we can see where pages are hard to use. We use this only to count visitors and improve the site. See the Cookie Policy for the cookies they set and how to turn them off.
If you are a member
Your name, email address, password and role (for example Author or Gallery contributor). Finds, posts and photos you add are labelled with your account and the date, so we know who recorded what.
If you email us
Your email address and whatever you choose to tell us.
How we use it
- To let members sign in and to control what each member can change.
- To keep a record of who added or changed each find, post and photo.
- To reply to your messages.
- To understand how the site is used, so we can improve it.
Find locations
The exact places where finds were made are shown only to signed-in members. This protects the sites from illegal metal detecting.
How long we keep it
Accounts are kept while you are a member. Find records form part of the dig's archive and are kept permanently, with the name of the member who recorded them. Emails are kept only as long as we need them.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the information we hold about you,
- correct anything that is wrong,
- delete your information or close your account, and
- stop using your information for a particular purpose.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
Keeping it safe
The site is only served over a secure (HTTPS) connection, passwords are stored scrambled, and accounts lock after repeated failed sign-ins. No system is completely secure, but we take reasonable care.
Under 18s
This website is for adults: you must be 18 or over to use it (see our Terms). We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you think we have, please contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update it here and change the date at the top of the page.
