Does the wall continue North?

Zillah has been working hard in Trench TR49, which was excavated to determine whether the structure in Trench TR47 continues northwards. To date, this seemed unlikely, as the wall appears to have been robbed out, with backfill and levelling deposits now occupying its former position.

Persistence may, however, have paid off: a speculative 'cut' appears to be emerging along the eastern side of the wall line (see photo below). Specifically, there is a distinct line or cut between a largely rubble-and-clay area to the west and a predominantly darker soil-and-clay area to the east. The rubble may represent the foundation of the removed wall. Evidence of a rubble foundation has been identified on the same wall, suggesting that a consistent construction method may have been used here.  This is important as this indicates the wall’s extent or whether it changes direction.
