We have been excavating the Glebe Field for over five years, often noting the absence of carved objects. In the past fortnight, however, we found two marked stones: a sandstone whetstone with A-shaped striations and a larger piece of red Carboniferous limestone bearing what may be an M or two inverted Vs. The latter resembles a Maria or witches’ mark, although this interpretation remains highly speculative.
I will leave it to you to decide, but we are pleased to at least now have these accidental or intentional pieces of stylised calligraphy.
