Parasol Handle

Last Friday 22nd May was another enjoyable day on site. The weather is warming up now and most of us are looking now for occasional shelter from the sun rather than the rain and strong winds. Trench TR50 has given us yet another beautiful small find, research suggests it may be a Victorian parasol handle with very intricate carving in bone ,ivory or the like material. Best guess at the moment is ivory, with a thread cut in the wider end it has to be a dense more durable material ,personally I can't imagine bone would survive such fine work. But it could of course be from one of the commonly used tusks. The second image is to highlight the heavy influence of Art Nouveau and Liberty.
