English Heritage Storage Depot Visit
With less opportunity for digging due to rain and shorter days, our group are now visiting places connected with archaeology. Today we had a fantastic insight into the "backroom' work carried out by English Heritage. By this I mean the storage, recording and conservation of literally tens of thousands of artefacts big and small. The English Heritage staff were extremely helpful and eager to help us with all our enquiries and questions, it really was a fascinating tour. We were shown the big warehouse facility where larger less fragile artefacts are kept, this included diverse objects from 13th century Hailes Abbey ceiling bosses to Second World War anti aircraft guns. Also we saw the low humidity and temperature controlled facilities where copper alloys, and very delicate objects such as paper documents are stored. Finally we were allowed to look closely at some Roman to Medieval objects. It was a great tour ably arranged by Julie, thanks also to the SAGs who all contributed to a great day out.
