Non-Stop Archaeology!
Non-Stop Archaeology!
What a busy week. Tuesday a display in the Church hall as part of the Heritage Open Days Festival, quite a few visitors with lots of questions.
Church Hall display
Wednesday an evening with Yate and District Archaeology Group and Andrew Buchanan talking about A Roman Villa Rustica. A site we visited and now we know a lot more about it.
Thursday a SAG workshop with pottery expert Lorraine Mepham, this is the second time that she has visited and it is a great privilege that she gives us her time and experience free of charge – well a nice lunch and a bunch of flowers. There is so much to learn and I never thought I would ever say Medieval pottery is fascinating but it is! I can now add Redcliffe wares to our growing typology and I surprised myself that I was identifying some sherds correctly . So pleased that some of our group could join us. Thank you all for your input and won’t mention the one who got the day wrong and came on Friday (but he is in the next bit of my blog)!!!
Group session on Medieval Pottery
At last it is Friday my favourite day of the week. Mary L, Catherine, Steve, Pam Tim, Liza, Mo and Aaron on site with David and I. Between us we moved over a ton of top soil and I even had a blister on my trowel hand.Apart from the thrill of uncovering the past the benefit to my mental health is sustaining. And today we had one of our youngest diggers alongside our oldest and there is 55 years difference between them and yet they worked together without any age barrier.
Saturday and David said “can we have a day off”. No we need to put the heritage display up in the Church hall again and write a blog.

Maybe a day off on Sunday?
