Digging a New Trench

Against all expectations last Friday 5th September the general consensus was the ground was now soft enough for a new evaluation trench across the mound possibly forming  part of an inner enclosure . The site chosen is over the north end of the large high resistance anomaly  as can be seen on the image below. Its position will give  a good contrast between high and lower resistance and it is our continued search for proof this may be part of the  inner enclosure, nothing found to date in the trenches further south on the same anomaly suggest this.

Zillah's faith in drier weather later yesterday (Friday 12th ) proved correct and we had a full day on site from 8.15am until 4.45pm. Good work was carried out stripping back the sub soil in the west of the trench to a redeposited rubble layer. A lot of soil was moved yesterday and all of it sieved into the tractor bucket. Some large animal bones were found, probably cattle. Thanks to everyone who dug the last two Fridays.

Friday 5th Digging commences.                                                                     Friday 12th West area getting down on a rubble layer.

the pottery finds, which was a common theme on other evaluation

tenches on this mound.
