Samian ware in the Glebe Field
Looking at some of the smaller potsherds found in TR39, it appears we have a tiny piece of Roman Samian ware but also what is possible a piece of Oxford ware. Last year Zillah found the base pictured below in TR31, which is closer to the main trench on the platform. Samian ware, mass produced in Gaul was prevalent during the first two and half centuries of Roman Britain but the clay supply was exhausted and so copies of it were made in Oxford. However, as can be seen from the base found in the Glebe it is a softer fabric and not so durable.
Thanks to Catherine who has lent us the Samian potsherd ( no. 1 in the image ) found at the Fry's factory development Keynsham.
1 found in Keynsham 2 and 3 found in the Glebe Field . Above sample of complete Samian bowl.
